Wendi's research focuses on negotiation and conflict management in the global marketplace. Much of her work investigates the universality of negotiation theory that has been largely developed in the West (information exchange, persuasion, decision-making biases, reciprocity, offer-counter offers) and defines cultural norms for negotiation strategies, sequences, and stages in multiple national cultures. Other areas of research include the role of context in communication, behavioral adaptation, and third culture building in cross-cultural interactions. Her research on reciprocity in cross-cultural negotiations has received awards from both the American Psychological Association and the International Association for Conflict Management. Her work identifying the different paths that U.S. and Japanese negotiators take to generate joint gains was recognized with an award from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues.

Neil's years at the University of Waterloo have been spent helping to build the Rhetoric and Professional Writing/Communication Design programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels while establishing a profile in the practice of professional communication and documentation. To those ends, he has published numerous how-to computer books and many feature articles, columns, and reviews in computer magazines such as PC Magazine, Smart Computing, PC Computing, PC Gamer, etc. In addition, he has consulted with a variety of technology companies on topics such as proposal writing, copyright and patent issues, and public relations. Also in the professional writing line, he recently begun to design and work on the production of board games of the complex simulation kind, and in the past he was a music columnist and a computer columnist for the local newspaper. All of this activity has found its way into his classes and his research, as has his long-time fascination with the writings of J. R. R. Tolkien.
